Moeen - England must improve batting performance

Sunday, July 17 2016 by SNTV
  • Moeen Ali says England will be keen to improve with the bat after Pakistan stretched ahead on the third day of the first Test against England at Lord's on Saturday (16th July). Misbah ul-Huq's side reached 214 for 8 in their second innings at stumps, an overall lead of 281.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Moeen Ali, England all-rounder: (on the state of the match and how England are going to try and win it)

"First innings we didn't bat very well and we want to put that right, hopefully in the second innings. There's a lot of us who want to score some runs and hopefully win the game, but it's going to be tough, you know? They have a very good bowling attack and we saw in the first innings they have a very good leg spinner who's going to cause us trouble."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Moeen Ali, England all-rounder: (on Pakistan leg spinner Yasir Shah)

"We've been preparing quite well against leg spinners, but like I say, first innings we didn't play very well against him and he got a lot of wickets, so hopefully second innings and... We're going to have to play him well throughout the series if we're going to win the series and he's going to be the big threat, I think, tomorrow and hopefully we'll bat well against him."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Moeen Ali, England all-rounder: (on England all-rounder Chris Woakes, who has taken 11 wickets so far in the Test and the game could be named after him if England win)

"Yeah, I think so, he just needs a hundred now and then hopefully he can go on all three boards in the changing room, but no, he's bowled brilliantly in this game."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Moeen Ali, England all-rounder: (on England's fielding)

"Obviously, the catching... we spoke about it. We haven't been catching very well actually this summer, I don't think, and I think going back to the Ashes, the reason why we won it was because we held some brilliant catches and hung on to everything. And we're going to have to get better with our fielding, I don't think we've fielded very well throughout the whole summer so far, but we know we can field better and with the score obviously, they've got 280 (the lead), hopefully go 'bang, bang' tomorrow and keep them less than, you know, 300, 310. It's going to be tough, but we've got some good players and hopefully we can knock them off."
