De Villiers: Batting cost South Africa

Sunday, June 05 2016 by SNTV
  • Reaction after West Indies claim a four-wicket victory over South Africa in the first match in the Tri-Series in Georgetown, Guyana on Friday (June 3).

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain:

"30 or 40 runs more would have been a very competitive total. Probably a wining score and so, the positive out of that is the assessment was good. Unfortunately the execution just wasn't spot on in the last ten overs with the batting."

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa captain:

"(Kieron) Pollard played a really good knock tonight from the word go. He looked in control. He played the spinners well and other than that the spinners really dominated most batters and I thought (indistinct) and (Aaron) Phangiso really had a great partnership going there. So I was proud of the way they performed and unfortunately one or two just went over the boundary. That could have changed the game a little bit, but those are the small margins of this beautiful game we play. Unfortunately it didn't go our way tonight, but there is still a long way to go in the series."

SOUNDBITE: (English) AB de Villiers, South Africa, captain:

"Yeah, the wickets over here in Guyana are a bit slow so it important for them to adapt - which I thought they did really well with a lot of slower balls. We had to dig nice and hard. it will be a different wicket once again in St Kitts and also in Barbados. So it will be really important just to communicate well about how the conditions will change as we move on in the series. Over here I thought we adapted really well and seam bowlers bowled well and there was nothing that the bowlers could have done more. Maybe one or two half chances could have gone our way. Like I said, it is the batting and with the batting it cost ourselves tonight."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Phil Simmons, West Indies coach:

"I think again the bowling has been fantastic and the fielding has been... it is getting to where I would like to see it. It is improving all the time and I think from that point of view - those are the two things I like. Everybody knows that we can bowl and bat, but the fielding in particular has been improving. That has helped a lot in us keeping teams to low scores."
