Morgan: "We'll have home advantage"

Thursday, June 02 2016 by SNTV
  • England captain Eoin Morgan spoke on Wednesday (1st June) about the upcoming 2017 ICC Champions Trophy

SOUNDBITE (English) Steve Elworthy, ECB 's Director of Events (on the 2017 ICC Champions Trophy):

"I think we've got a really unique opportunity over 2017 because we've got the Champions Trophy but we've also got the women's World Cup directly after it so we've got two global tournaments. This Champions Trophy is going to be hugely significant again to build on the success of 2013. 2013 was hugely successful; it had over 83% attendance across the 15 games. That shows the appeal of the format itself. From our perspective we want to up that, we want to up the delivery of that and we want to make it even more special than it was in 2013."

SOUNDBITE (English) Eoin Morgan, England captain (on having home advantage):

"I do think it's an advantage. In 2013 we thought it was an advantage apart from in the final where we played on a really dry surface which was a bit alien to us at the time. Come this time next year I think home advantage will work in our favour."

SOUNDBITE (English) David Richardson, CEO of the ICC (on the ICC Champions Trophy)

"The fact that it's a major ICC event makes it special. It's something the players look forward to, it's something that if you do well at can define a career. Like other sports we have our majors and the Champions Trophy is certainly one of them."

SOUNDBITE (English) David Richardson, CEO of the ICC (on West Indies not qualifying for the Champions Trophy):

"I think people enjoy watching the West Indies playing whatever competition they're playing in. They'll be missed because they play a very attacking style of cricket. The unusual thing about this competition is that the qualification is completely meritocratic. The fact that Bangladesh have qualified...they didn't qualify because West Indies were bad or other teams we bad. They had tremendous performances over the last 18 months."
