Selection isn't rocket science - Marsh

Saturday, May 03 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Rod Marsh wants a return to the 'basics' on Friday after replacing John Inverarity as chairman of the Australian national cricket selection panel.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE (English) Rod Marsh, Chairman of selectors, Cricket Australia

"It's not rocket science. You try and pick the best from around the country that you possibly can. That's all you can do as a selector. You have a look at all the stats. And the sometimes, you'll asses and analyse it closely, you can see that a guy might have made more runs that someone else. But you know, and you have this gut feeling, that he won't be as effective against this particular attack on a particular ground. So you don't pick him. However, if you can't find a reason not to pick a bloke with the best stats then usually the guy with the best stats gets picked."
