India had only beaten Australia twice in 11 attempts at the Champions Trophy, and they got off to a nervous start in the semi final on Saturday.
Jamie Dwyer tapped in his second goal of the tournament for Australia in the sixth minute.
The Aussie captain then won a penalty, following a goal mouth scramble - which he put away with ease, making it 2-0.
Keiran Govers made sure of the victory in the 45th minute - he knocked in Trent Mitton's rebounded shot booking Australia's place in the final with a 3-0 win.
It was goals galore as the Netherlands took on Pakistan in the other semi-final.
The Dutch were wasting no time - Billy Bakker giving his team the advantage in the second minute.
Seve van Ass took advantage of a goal mouth scramble in the 20th minute, making it 2-0.
Pakistan scored three minutes later through an own goal by Sander Baart of the Netherlands.
Bakker netted a second goal with three minutes left of the half with a solo effort to give the Dutch a two-goal advantage again.
The second half was also full of goals.
Valetnin Verga, who left early in the first half after a collision, returned in style to make it 4-1.
From there, the Dutch knew they had it in the bag. Late goals on each side brought the score to 5-2.
The Netherlands will go in search of their ninth Champions Trophy gold medal when they face Australia in the final.
