After 100 Test appearances for England, with 50 as captain, Andrew Strauss retired from all forms of cricket at Lord's Cricket Ground on Wednesday.

The England and Wales Cricket Board also announced that Alastair Cook, Strauss' opening partner and England's one-day international captain, will take over as the new Test captain.

Strauss stated he had run his race - and during his successful time in charge since January 2009, he led England to home-and-away wins in Ashes series against fierce rivals Australia and to the top of the test rankings for the first time.

Cook said it was a "sad dressing room" when Strauss notified the team of his decision on Tuesday.

Cook has played 83 tests for England and took over as one-day captain last year - he will attempt to lead England back to the top of the test rankings after losing the position following the home series loss to South Africa this summer.
