Reaction after Australia beat India by 87 runs in ODI tri-series

Monday, February 27 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

India captain MS Dhoni felt his side was on the wrong end of a contentious decision not to dismiss Australian batsmen David Hussey, in India's one-day international defeat by Australia at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Sunday (February 26th).

The hosts booked their place in the triangular series finals with an 87-run victory over the tourists, but Dhoni told a news conference he felt Hussey should have been given out after holding out his hand to block Suresh Raina's return from the edge of the fielding circle.

Shane Watson was pleased with his side's convincing win in his first match as Australia captain - filling in for the injured Michael Clarke.

SUPER CAPTION: MS Dhoni, India captain.

"I was also part of a run-out in Pakistan when we were touring and the umpire was there and he defended that was right on his face and he was given out. In this case I think David was really lucky. I think he should have been given out, but it's not in my hands, he was not given out." (Reporter) You thought he was protecting his wicket? "well it's difficult, because in his judgement he may be protecting himself, but his hand was too far ahead. Like an example, you say a soccer incident where if your hands are popping out and it hits your hand you get a penalty, irrespective of what's happened. That's why plain and simple. You look at it, it's out."

    2. 00:44 SOUNDBITE (English):

SUPER CAPTION: MS Dhoni, India captain.

"About shuffling the batting order; if you see more often than not, Sachin (Tendulkar) and Sehwag, they are the best men to open often. People talk a lot about who is best suited for that particular position and if you have Sehwag and Sachin opening the innings, they are the best people to open. Gautam (Gambhir) has got plenty of experience batting at number three. Ideally, if you see, that's how they are supposed to bat. Vido (Sehwag) and Sachin to open and Gautam to follow."

    3. 01:15 SOUNDBITE (English):

SUPER CAPTION: MS Dhoni, India captain.

"There will be tough tours, you can't really go one way. What we have seen is that teams, they go through a purple patch where they are doing really well and then slam down and them come to a level where they need to improve. So it's a passing phase and hopefully we are also going through that phase. You can't be really consistent like Manchester United. Hopefully, we will be with the youngsters coming through and playing more games and we will be a much better side and perform better."

    4. 01:48 MS Dhoni leaves news conference.

    5. 01:54 SOUNDBITE (English):

SUPER CAPTION: Shane Watson, Australia captain.

(on difference between World Cup and now)

"It's nice to I suppose, comparatively to the, there's a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket, compared to what it was in Ahmedabad, but a lot has passed since then, especially during the test series and watching from afar. But also what India were able to do during that World Cup as well, was very impressive with all the pressure that they had at home. But things do change, times do change and playing at home as well, we know that there's a bit of pace and bounce in the wicket especially, that is out big advantage here. So, it was nice to be able to make the most of that tonight."
