Olympiacos Piraeus successfully defended their Euroleague title on Sunday, defeating Real Madrid.

After months of intense competition, the whole season came down to this one game.

And Real Madrid, looking for their first Euroleague title crown in nearly two decades, seized the initiative, powering ahead to a 27-10 lead by the end of the first quarter.

But the Greeks stormed into the second quarter, eating into Real's lead to end the first half just four points behind (41-37).

Three consecutive three-pointers by Vassilis Spanoulis then saw Olympiacos finally edge ahead.

Yet just as in the semi-final against Barcelona on Friday, Real raised their game - Rudy Fernandez giving the Catalans a one-point advantage.

But a crucial surge from Olympiacos in the last quarter propelled the Reds to victory.

Their tight defence and speed saw them advance with unstoppable momentum - and they won by 100 points to 88 at the final whistle.

Olympiacos became the first team to win back-to-back titles in seven years - and Giorgos Bartzokas became the first Greek coach ever to win the Euroleague.

Early in the day, CSKA Moscow won a tightly contested third-place match against Barcelona Regal, coming through 74-73.
