The moguls World Cup season opened in dramatic style in Finland.

A wild and unpredictable dual event ended with Canada's Philippe Marquis going up against Japanese talent Sho Endo in the men's big final.

The competition from the quarter-finals onward lacked the usual big names.

Leaving the door open for whoever could step in and take advantage.

Marquis was the one who had the biggest boots.

After taking down exciting USA rookie Thomas Rowley in the semifinals, he edged the explosive Endo in the final.

    SOUNDBITE: Philippe Marquis, Canada

"Oh my god it feels good to start the year like that and, like you said, it has been a while since I stepped up like that on the podium but i have been skiing quite well over the last few years and I knew it was just a matter of time, it was just a matter of getting a little bit more training and a little bit more consistency and here I am you know, first World Cup of the year and it started awfully well."

The win, Marquis' second of his career.

It's also his first podium since the 2013 Olympic test event in Russia.

In the women's competition, former junior world champion Yulia Galysheva of Kazakhstan grabbed victory.

    She overcame Canada's Chloe Dufour-Lapointe.

    It's the 22-year-old's first win since 2012.
