Ted Ligety made World Cup history in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia, on Saturday.

The 29-year-old American recorded the best time of the day with 2 minutes 30:80 seconds to become the first man in World Cup history to win six races in any one discipline at any venue.

Ligety has a certain affinity with Kranjska Gora, having been victorious there in six out of the last seven years.

Finishing as runner-up was Austria's Benjamin Raich, in 2 minutes, 30:98 seconds; 0:18 seconds slower than Ligety.

Raich was sitting in 17th place after his first run but he climbed 15 places to finish the day in second.

This is the first time the 36-year-old has stood on a giant slalom podium in two years.

Henrik Kristoffersen of Norway came third, in a time of 2 minutes, 31:05; 0:25 seconds behind Ligety.

When Ligety isn't donning his skis, he runs his own company. In second place overall, 50 points off the lead, his World Cup title hopes are far from being in recession.
