  • Intro:

The President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) says the number of doping cases detected at the Sochi Olympics shows the drug-testing program is working.

Five athletes have been sent home since Friday, with Austrian cross-country skier Johannes Duerr kicked out on Sunday after testing positive for the blood booster EPO.

EPO is used to boost red blood cells that carry oxygen to the muscles, increasing stamina and endurance.

The other four were: Latvian hockey player Vitalijs Pavlovs, Ukrainian cross-country skier Marina Lisogor, German biathlete Evi Sachenbacher-Stehle and Italian bobsledder William Frullani.

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee President:

"The number of the cases, for me is not really relevant. For me what is important, is that we see that the system works."

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee President:

"The success of the home team is always an important part of the success of the games overall. This we have seen in many countries, this was saw just two years ago with Team GB in London, that if the home team is successful then of course the crowds are being more enthusiastic and the Olympic atmosphere is building up."

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Bach, International Olympic Committee President:

"You know we were here you saw an (in 1994) old Stalanist-style sanatorium city, where whenever you entered the room you were looking at the roof (to see) whether you would be hit by something falling down. It was terrible, and then seeing now twenty years after, this transformation, is amazing."
