The Stelvio course in Bormio, Italy played host to an FIS Ski World Cup men's downhill race on Sunday.

The start of the race was delayed for 40 minutes due to fog and low visibility, and overnight snow provided a much softer surface than had been apparent during training.

Erik Guay of Canada was sure to be against the medal positions after winning in Val Gardena last week.

The Canadian finished with a time of 1. 54. 49 and placed third, 0.51 back.

But it was Aksel Lund Svindal who was the man to beat, being the current overall World Cup leader.

The World and Olympic Champion looked to be on top form, finding speed and taking the turns at pace.

The Norwegian clocked an unbeatable time of 1 minute, 54.08 seconds to finish 0.39 seconds ahead of Hannes Reichelt of Austria, who with a second place finish, equalled his best performance of the season.

The win allowed Svindal to extend his overall lead ahead of two-time defending champion Marcel Hirscher to 195 points in the World Cup standings.
