Lake Louise staged the first Downhill of the 2014 Alpine World Cup season.

Adrien Theaux of France moved into provisional first place after covering the Olympic downhill course in one minute, 50.01 seconds.

Norway's Aksel Lund Svindal was aiming to win the Canadian downhill for a second year in succession.

The defending champion was unable to displace Theaux from the lead though, moving into second place with a time of one minute, 50.13 seconds and eventually slipping down into fourth.

Klauss Kroell showed him how it should be done.

The Austrian was off Theaux's pace at four of the five time checks, but a fast final section saw him claim the provisional lead in one minute, 49.93 seconds.

Kroell had high hopes of claiming his first World Cup win since a downhill in Kvitfjell, Norway in March 2012, but they were dashed by Dominik Paris.

The Italian, who won two World Cup downhills last season, bettered Kroell's mark by three-hundredths of a second, claiming victory in one minute, 49.90 seconds.

The men's World Cup season continues in Lake Louise on Sunday with a super giant slalom.
