Russia's Olympic torch relay for the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi will take place over 123 days, covering 65,000 kilometres

Each torch weighs about two kilogrammes and is designed to burn for eight minutes and organisers say that 90 per cent of Russians will be within an hour's reach of a torch relay

Head of the 2014 organising comittee, Dmitry Chernyshenko, explained the proccess -

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Dmitry Chernyshenko, Head of the 2014 Olympics Organising Committee:
"The torch relay is unique in terms of the distance it will cover and its duration - 123 days and 65,000 kilometres - which is equal to one and a half times the equator. But its success will be measured not by these figures alone. The success (of the torch relay) will be measured by the country's involvement in the biggest festival, the most positive project, which is the Sochi Olympic Games itself."

Manufacturers say they will continue to burn in severe weather conditions, withstanding temperatures as low as minus-40 degrees centigrade, as well as torrential rain.
