  • Intro:

While most of the people were gathering with their families and friends to welcome in the New Year, Chinese sailor Guo Chuan started 2013 at sea, where he also celebrated his 48th birthday.

    Script:

This is a unique way to celebrate your 48th birthday.

Guo Chuan had to climb his 20 metre mast to repair a broken headsail in the middle of the ocean.

And when the Chinese sailor got to the top, he realised he had made a mistake.

    SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) Guo Chuan
"It is very dangerous to climb the mast, especially when you do it alone. It is difficult to climb up and more difficult to get down. I should have contacted my base before climbing the mast and take some advice for my safety. But I am sorry I didn't do it and I hope I can get back to board safely. This is my first time to climb the mast during the voyage and I hope I don't have to do it any more in the whole trip.

Back in the safety of his cabin, Guo listened to a birthday message from his wife and son.

48 days into his solo around the world trip, Guo has the advantage of saling calm seas as he ventures east of Qingdao.
