This is a unique way to celebrate your 48th birthday.

Guo Chuan had to climb his 20 metre mast to repair a broken headsail in the middle of the ocean.

And when the Chinese sailor got to the top, he realised he had made a mistake.

"It is very dangerous to climb the mast, especially when you do it alone. It is difficult to climb up and more difficult to get down. I should have contacted my base before climbing the mast and take some advice for my safety. But I am sorry I didn't do it and I hope I can get back to board safely. This is my first time to climb the mast during the voyage and I hope I don't have to do it any more in the whole trip.

Back in the safety of his cabin, Guo listened to a birthday message from his wife and son.

48 days into his solo around the world trip, Guo has the advantage of saling calm seas as he ventures east of Qingdao.
