  • Intro:

The annual Coney Island Polar Bear Club's New Year's Day swim attracted hundreds who braved icy waters on Tuesday.

    Script:

New Year's Day on Coney Island in Brooklyn means only one thing.

A nice dip in the icy water.

The Coney Island Polar Bear Club's New Year's Day swim attracts hundrends of swimmers every year and they really are enthusiatic when it comes to their annual winter plunge.

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Carlos Planes, Swimmer
"We're going in second. I love it. This is Coney Island, (there's) only one Coney Island. Bring it back, come back to home. This is Coney Island's Open. Let's go."

Some add insulation by dressing up but many bare the cold.

Temperatures were just above freezing but it was worth it for the swimmers.

This year's swim raised money for victims of Hurrican Sandy which rocked New York in October.

And it was a cause that meant a lot to New Yorkers as record numbers took part in this year's event.
