The City Challenge is a bespoke promotional event, built round a motorsport event, but part of a package that can also include cultural attractions.

Ideal for a city aiming to increase its global profile, and Baku fits that bill . A 2.1-kilometre long race circuit was constructed around Government House in the Azeri capital.

The winners of the event were the Hexis team of Frederick Makovieski and Stef Dusseldorf in a McLaren MP4 GT3 car.

Second place was taken by the BMW Z4 of former GT1 driver Frank Kechele and Mathias Lauda, son of Formula 1 great, Niki.

The real drama, unexpectedly - and expensively, came in the classic Formula 1 race. Only 12 March 761s were built, and they raced in Formula 1 in 1976 and 1977.

Two are believed to have been written off. Another one can now be added to that total.

At least Brazilian driver Abba Kogan was able to be rescued, seemingly in good spirits.
