Silver medallist Cavendish accepts race crash blame

  • Mark Cavendish finally claimed an elusive Olympic medal after a dramatic conclusion in cycling's omnium.
    After eight years of trying, and at the third time of asking, Cavendish took silver behind Italy's Elia Viviani. Cavendish also took the blame for a a mid-race crash that appeared to be of his own making.

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Cavendish, silver medallist, omnium:

    "It's an incredible group of people you know, we have an incredible committed bike riders. But I think the backroom staff who do probably the majority of the work and they've been phenomenal you know. The physios, the soigneurs (attendant), the mechanics, the data analysts, the dieticians, the engineers that develop all our equipment all our suits and that. Really they're like an incredible group of people."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Cavendish, silver medallist, omnium:

    (Q: What's next for you? How about Tokyo?):

    "I have a job you know, I don't train for four years for the Olympics, I'm racing again next week so I have a job to get back to which is with my road team and try to be successful there."

    SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Cavendish, silver medallist, omnium:

    (Q: Your thoughts about the accident during the race?)

    "Of course, it's my fault you know, and I real feel dreadful. I messaged Sanghoon (Sanghorn Park - collided with Cavendish during the race which led to the South Korean cyclist being thrust from his bike and taken away on a stretcher.) this morning and I called his coach last night to see if he is ok. I really hope he is ok you know and I am really sorry for causing him some pain, it was a racing incident but it was entirely my fault."
