Marina Alabau wins gold in windsurfing, canoer David Cal becomes most decorated Spanish athlete ever.

Alabau won the Olympic gold medal in women's windsurfing in what could be the discipline's final race in the games.

Windsurfing got dropped from the line-up for the 2016 Rio Olympics in a vote in May, and will be replaced by kitesurfing.

The International RS:X Class Association filed a legal challenge last week against the International Sailing Federation. It has been reported that the representative of the Spanish Sailing Federation Gerardo Seeliger voted against windsurfing due to a misunderstanding of the voting system.

"The truth is that I knew this was my moment, my condition right now, my motivations, my age, this was the chance I had to take, because I may not have another one. I'm really happy I won, most of all to show the Spanish people, to make sure they are aware of the mistake they made, because it was the Spanish who made it, and it's their fault if windsurfing is out now".

"If they will drop windsurf in the end, I will compete in kitesurfing, I live in Tarifa which is kite surfing's heaven, and I have been practicing for the last eight years, it is a sport I feel I can master. I think it will be a mix of windsurfers, who will represent the majority of the competitors, and a small part who will come specifically from the kite surfing world"

    SOUNDBITE (Spanish)

"We set ourselves this goal four years ago, because there were no Spanish athlete with five Olympic medals. And you always have to find something to push you further, especially in the everyday work you have to put in. We had four Olympic medals before, the first one was a gold, and after that the goal we set was to break the record of number of medals for Spain, and we made it".
