Canada's men's eight rowers could not defend their Olympic title against a powerful German team on Wednesday (August 1st), but the Canadians captured a hard-fought silver for the country's fifth medal of the Olympics.

SOUNDBITE: Brian Price, Canadian eight cox (English):

"You know, we were bronze medallists at the 2011 World Championships, so we knew that we had the capability to do it. We go into Lucerne at the World Cup and we set the world record, but then finish (in) bronze again at the World Cup. So, all the signs were pointing to us having the ability to win a medal."

SOUNDBITE: Will Crothers, Canadian eight (English):

"So, we wanted to get out and be relaxed and get into that power-rhythm. So, for me setting the rhythm, it's set by power so the guys behind me were driving it so I had a nice rhythm and could keep it sustainable - so we had something left in the end. That was our plan, you know, let the Brits go out after the Germans and attack and do whatever they were going to do, and we were going to stick to our plan. It wasn't about anybody else - it was about what we were doing and our training."

SOUNDBITE: Malcolm Howard, Canadian eight (English):

"The race today was unbelievable. We just saw it on video for the first time and I was like, "Wow. That's a pretty tight eight's race. You don't.. I mean first to sixth place: three seconds (apart)! I mean you almost never see that in a men's race. That in itself is rewarding. To be honest, it's pretty neat to come along with a group of guys that are younger, and a little bit less experienced, and you know they are powerful guys too and it's fun too."
