Following Saturday's postponement because of rough sea conditions and poor visibility on the Dnieper River, the drivers were back to compete in round three of the Formula One H2O World Championship in Kiev.

The usual 'Le Mans' style start was replaced by a rolling start under a pace boat and yellow flag for the first five laps, but when the green flag was waved and the action finally got going, it was Sami Selio that led the field, followed by 2011 Rookie of the Year Shaun Torrente and reigning world champion Alex Carella.

After two laps, Team China's Stan Kurtsenovskyi flipped over and the yellow flag was out again. When it was withdrawn, Torrente swept into the lead and opened up an eight second lead over Selio and Carella.

Torrente looked invincible until the yellow flag appeared once more after Ivan Brigada's Caudwell stopped - this intervention had a dramatic effect on the outcome of the race.

Torrente, who seemed to have the race in the bag, somehow lost power and ground to a halt. Mechanical failure had struck the young American for the second race in a row. Selio grabbed the lead and never looked back.

Al Hameli appeared as if from nowhere, having started from tenth place as a result of a spectacular crash in qualifying and stole second place from Carella, who had to settle for third.

Round four of the Formula One H2O World Championship takes place in China, on October the 1st.
