A youthful Australian swimming team settled into its pre-Olympic base in Manchester during their first session in the pool on Monday and 27-year-old 'veteran' Leisel Jones had some advice for her compatriots.

Australia are one of the historical superpowers in the swimming pool.

It is up to the team that have been training at their Olympic camp in Manchester to continue their nation's tradition.

But expectations are low.

It is a young team and many will be competing in their first Olympic Games.

Leisel Jones will be appearing in her fourth and the three time Olympic gold medallist has been sharing her wisdom with her younger compatriots.

"It's so daunting and you can give them all the advice in the world and say 'treat it like another swimming meet' but it's not, it's the Olympic games, it's massive, the whole world is watching. If you win an Olympic gold it changes your life, for the better obviously. It can be really daunting. You can try and tell them to be relaxed, but you're not going to be. You're going to be a bundle of nerves, I was. I think you've just got to enjoy it, as much as you can. It's a spectacle and once you're a part of the Olympic community no one can take that away from you. These guys are so lucky to be able to experience it. We've got some really eager young kids on the team and I think they're going to have a blast."

Jones is unlikely to regain the 100m breast-stroke gold she won in Beijing four years ago but London 2012 could mark the successful dawn of a new Australian swimming elite.
