Togo's first and only Olympic medal winner says he hopes to be "a real contender" at this summer's Games.

French-born Benjamin Boukpeti is one of only six athletes from his country who are competing at London 2012.

"It's true my medal was the first Olympic medal in the country's history and everyone on the planet knows what the Olympics represents. Now all Togolese, whether at home or those living in Canada, the USA or in Germany and France, saw my achievement and when I returned to Togo I was received a little like a hero in the sense I represented my country abroad in a dignified manner and they were very proud."

"It's very similar to skiing. You see slalom skiing and this sport is very close. In kayaking there is a slope and you have to slalom between poles which have been placed in the middle of the path. So the first thing is the river which is like a ski run and secondly you have to be able to navigate the course as it's set."

"My goal is to be a real contender during the Olympics and give it my all and be the best and strongest out there. This is my third Olympics and just like in 2004 and 2008 I hope to be able to produce my best on the day."

"In Togo the population loves sport, whether its the African Cup of Nations, the World Cup, the European Cup. So with the population of Togo, they will be watching the Olympic Games and hoping their athletes win. I already feel the pressure and support, receiving lots of messages of backing from supporters. I hope that continues because it helps me prepare."
