Camper and Telefonica battle for second

Tuesday, May 08 2012 by SNTV

  • Intro:

Groupama hauled back Telefonica to take over third place on leg six of the Volvo Ocean Race as the boats headed towards Miami.

    Script:

As leg six of the Volvo Ocean Race entered its third week, the three frontrunners had to take
decisions on the best course of action.

Camper took the most radical and risky route conceding their second place position to Telefonica.

However, the status quo was re-established after Camper squeezed through a tiny island gap to steal back five nautical miles and edge Telefonica back to third.

SOUNDBITE (English): Will Oxley, Navigator of Camper with Emirates Team New Zealand:

"We're trying to sail the shortest distance possible. There's a little gap between Anguila and Scrub Island that's about 300 metres wide and about six metres deep."

Out in front, Puma had opened an 11-mile lead.

As the fleet entered into the final 1,000 nautical miles all bets were off.

While the leading three continued to battle, there was a chance for Groupama and Abu Dhabi to tighten matters and make the leaders nervous.

But the variety of conditions didn't help and Abu Dhabi and Groupama lost ground.

Camper also slowed whilst Puma had a healthy lead of almost 40 miles,

Telefonica took advantage and stole the second spot until Camper clawed their way back once more.

As a light wind zone close to Miami threatens to shuffle the fleet positions over the next 48 hours, all teams are still in with a chance to claim a podium result.
