The first 2012 event of the America's Cup World Series gets underway in Naples, Italy on Wednesday.

After last year's opening three regattas in Cascais, Plymouth and San Diego, Emirates Team New Zealand is the narrow series leader.

The crew skippered by Dean Barker lead ORACLE Racing Spithill by just one point.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dean Barker, Emirates Team New Zealand skipper:

"In terms of defending a one point lead, well there is no defending it in this sort of style of racing. You've just got to go out there and put together the best series you can."

Local fans will have two Italian crews to cheer on - Luna Rossa Swordfish - skippered by Max Sirena - and Luna Rossa Piranha.

Sirena's proud Naples are hosting the event.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Max Sirena, Luna Rossa Swordfish skipper:

"It's an honour to have the Cup and this event here in Italy. I think Naples has done a really great job to be ready for this event so I hope everyone will have a nice week and fun."

The AC World Series gives teams a chance to prepare for the America's Cup Challenger Series.
