Second Brit dead in Clipper Race

Sunday, April 03 2016 by SNTV
  • Londoner Sarah Young has been killed aboard yacht IchorCoal in the ninth leg of the Clipper Round the World Race. She is the second person to be killed in this race aboard IchorCoal. Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, founder of the race, said today they were all in shock at the loss.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, Clipper Round the World Race founder:

"Well, it is a very sad day for us all here at Clipper because during the night out in the Pacific, one of the crew on IchorCoal Clipper, Sarah Young, was washed over the side by a very big wave and by the time they recovered her, I am afraid she was dead. So, we're all in bit of shock to be honest with you because this is not the sort of thing we are used to having happen with us. I mean, we have two fatalities in 20 years and it just doesn't happen - but I am afraid it has on this occasion."

"Sarah Young was one of the girls doing the Round the World (race). She was a very popular member of the crew, a very easy person to like. She was a victualler on board in fact so she was the one who was responsible for all the food. So, she was an experienced sailor and I suppose we are still all wondering how on earth she managed to get washed over the side and why she wasn't tethered on (to the boat)."
