Sailor targets Rio after incredible recovery

  • American sailor Paige Railey talks about her hopes for next year's Olympic Games after her remarkable recovery from a serious bike accident last year.

This could be one of the most incredible stories at next year's Olympic games. Paige Railey could compete in Rio despite this...

    SOUNDBITE: (English), Paige Railey:

"I had a pretty bad bike accident about one year ago. So I had spinal injury, brain injury, hand injuries. So it has been quite an uphill battle for about a year. So things are really coming around and I am just fighting to get back onto the podium."

"They wrote me off for about six months - they didn't think I'd be able to get into the boat until at least January. So I've been pretty fast in my progress. I still have a year left before the Games, so a lot more can be done."

Railey is already winning again, she took the Laser Radials at the Pan American Games in Toronto just a year after her accident.

Now the American is competing at the Laser Radial World Championship in Oman - in January she will compete in Miami where she can qualify for Brazil.

    SOUNDBITE: (English), Paige Railey:

"Rio is one of my favourite places to sail in the world, so I actually spend a lot of time there training and I was just there for the test event and I sailed really well. So I am pretty excited for the Games, I am just using all these events to make sure I am prepared for that one."

The way she's going, you wouldn't bet against the American flag flying for her in a medal ceremony at next year's games.
