Ted Ligety wins the Men's Giant Slalom in Beaver Creek on Sunday (7th December) despite having a broken wrist.

Beaver Creek provided the picturesque setting for the latest round of the Men's Giant Slalom on Sunday.

Racing with a broken wrist after a training accident in late November, American Ted Ligety managed only the fourth fastest time on the first run.

But the Olympic Champion in this discipline used all of his considerable experience over the second run, finding speed where others failed to on the deteriorating course as he powered down for a leading combined time of two minutes, 34.07 seconds.

An anxious wait followed with the three skiers faster than him in the first run still to ski.

Austria's Marcel Hirscher was next down the course but trailed Ligety from the start, and was unable to find enough extra speed on the course.

He finished with a combined time of two minutes 34.67 seconds - 0.6 seconds slower than the American.

Alexis Pinturault - third in the Olympic Giant Slalom in February - posed a significant threat, producing a strong second run.

But he was unable to match Ligety and finished 0.18 seconds slower.

For Ligety it was a 23rd career Giant Slalom World Cup victory, tying him with Switzerland's Michael von Gruenigen for second all-time in the discipline.
