Former ASP world champion Joel Parkinson of Australia is out of the Vans World Cup of Surfing at Sunset Beach in Hawaii.

He was scheduled to enter the event in Round 3, Heat 1 but withdrew after sustaining a suspected shoulder and back injury while free-surfing.

Parkinson was pressed into the reef by two large waves and went to hospital for an injury assessment.

He was still talking and mobile, but in considerable pain.

In Round 2 action, Australia's Jack Freestone suffered a critical defeat which may dash his hopes of qualifying for the 2015 ASP World Tour.

Freestone came third in his heat which was won by France's Maxime Huscenot.
