    Script:

Day Five of the Tour of Britain saw a surprise winner of the stage.

The riders faced a 177.3 kilometre cycle from Exmouth to Exeter.

Four riders escaped the peloton in the early moments of Thursday one of them Matthias Brandle at the back of the four man peloton.

Bradley Wiggins started the day some 30 seconds off the leader - of Michael Kwiatkowski.

Wiggins would finish close behind the leading peloton, yet trail the lead after day 5 by 36-seconds.

Overall leader Michal Kwiatkowski came to the front with around 84 kilometres to go in an attempt to limit his potential time loss.

Kwiatkowski and company closed to within a minute and 20 seconds with seven kilometres to go, but any chance of catching the stage leaders ended on the third and last of the day's categorised climbs.

Brandle, meanwhile, led from the front and saw Wynants and Archbold battling to stay in touch.

The Austrian held firm in the closing kilometres though and crossed the finishing line in time of four hours, 32 minutes and three seconds.

As a result there was no change at the top of the peloton - Kwiatkowski remains three seconds ahead of closest rival Edoardo Zardini, with Dylan Teuns and Nicolas Roche third and fourth respectively 14 seconds behind the leader.
