de la Cruz seals stage win on Vuelta a Espana

Monday, August 29 2016 by SNTV
  • 100 kilometres remaining on the ninth stage of Vuelta a Espana - and the fog and rain descended

12 out in front - but some of the key players were soon not in a position to respond.

Quintana, Froome and Contador failed to free themselves from the peloton and muster any sort of effective challenge.

That 12 was eventually whittled down to two - Devenyns and de la Cruz.

700 metres out from the finish, the latter broke clear.

The Etixx-Quick-Step man went on to win in three hours 47 minutes and 56 seconds.

Previous leader Quintana, Froome and Contador all finished two minutes and 56 seconds off the lead pace - meaning de la Cruz now inherited the overall lead.

His advantage over Quintana - 22 seconds.

The Spaniard's lead may not last long though, with the star names likely to attack on Monday's gruilling 188.7-kilometre (117.2-mile) stage that starts along the Atlantic coast.
