Denmark saw off a strong Swedish surge to seal their spot in the FIM Speedway World Cup final in Event 2 at Vastervik, Sweden on Tuesday (29th July).

    Script:

Denmark, Sweden, Latvia and the Czech Republic went head to head to scrap for places in Event 2 of the FIM Speedway World Cup in Sweden on Tuesday.

A dominant performance from Denmark earned them automatic qualification for the final.

They were pushed hard by the Swedish foursome who rallied from a poor start which saw Oliver Berntzon catapulted from his bike in the opening heat.

But by the end of the ninth heat, in-form Tomas H Jonasson had brought Sweden to within two points of Denmark.

Danish skipper Hans Andersen and Swedish champion Andreas Jonsson faced off in Heat 17, Jonsson recovering from a near-disastrous wobble to finish just behind Andersen.

A great ride from Jonasson in Heat 18 kept Swedish hopes alive as Denmark's lead was narrowed to three points.

But the penultimate heat belonged to Danish speedster Bjarne Pedersen.

He held off the challenge from Peter Ljung to put the final result beyond doubt.

Peter Kildemand ensured that Denmark won the final heat, keeping up the pressure to bring Denmark's winning total to 48 points, Sweden finishing five points adrift on 43.

Sweden will now have to play Race Off roulette against the USA, Australia and the Czech Republic in Poland to decide who wins the remaining berth for August's final.
