On Saturday, Ogier looked like he was facing a second straight defeat by Volkswagen team-mate and title rival Jari-Matti Latvala.

That all changed when the Finn hit a rock on the final stage of leg two and had to stop to change a wheel, dropping him to third. On Sunday, Ogier ended up finishing 1 minute 23.1 seconds quicker.

Latvala was unable to make any progress back up from third place, as Mads Ostberg kept his Citroen out of the VW's reach and clinched a hard-earned runner-up spot behind the ultimately dominant Ogier.

The Frenchman recorded his second victory in a row in Sardinia and stretches VW's run of wins to ten in succession.

Ogier is a qualified ski instructor and he'll be hoping Rally Poland is an equally downhill affair later this month.
