Sochi residents divided over Olympics infrastructure

  • Intro:

Residents surrounding Sochi were divided on Tuesday (4th February) over new expensive infrastructure in the mountains, built for the 2014 Winter Olympics.

    Script:

In the mountains of the Sochi region, a whole new infrastructure has been set up for the 2014 Winter Olympics: new hotels for athletes and the media were built, and winding roads and rail lines were cut upward into the mountains to newly-built Alpine facilities.
The changes did not leave the residents living in the villages surrounding the mountain venues and new hotel compounds unaffected.
The environmental effects and vast costs have come under criticism - and while some residents welcome the new infrastructure, some rural residents do not see positive effects in every respect.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Ivan Bogaturov, 46, local resident:
"Nobody will ever forget about us because we live in such a good region. Sochi is a resort, it was a summer resort before and now it is also a winter resort. I don't think that in the future those venues will not be used."

A record $51 billion has been spent on sports facilities and transportation infrastructure in the resort city of Sochi on the Black Sea coast - the most expensive Olympics in history
