  • Intro:

The 2014 Winter Olympic Games, which begin in the Russian city of Sochi on Friday, will see an increased number of anti-doping tests and will be the most rigourous in the history of the Winter Games.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (English) Dr Richard Budgett, IOC Medical Director:
"Well it is a fantastic state-of-the-art laboratory, and the crucial thing about an Olympic Games is that we're doing a huge number of tests - these two and a half thousand - the capacity is up to 250 per day, although there'll be less than that on most days. But it's really important that we get the results very quickly. Because we will normally get the results - negative results in 24 hours, positive results in 48 hours - and if it's for EPO, it could take 72 hours. But that means that the results process is far quicker than normal. And the athletes who really deserve the medals, who should have won the medals, will get awarded those medals normally before the Games have actually finished, which I think is a fantastic thing for sport, and a fantastic thing for the clean athletes."
