'Process of awakening must be cautious' - Jean-Luc Truelle

Friday, January 31 2014 by SNTV
  • Intro:

Michael Schumacher's doctors have started trying to wake up the former Formula One champion from the medically-induced coma he's been in since a skiing accident last month, his manager said on Thursday.

    Script:

SOUNDBITE: (French) Jean-Luc Truelle, Retired neurologist:
"First of all, this process of awakening must be cautious. It means that the drugs that are putting the brain to rest, that are putting the brain to sleep in order to protect it because it is fragile, are being progressively removed. So it has to be progressive and it must be checked that the pressure inside the skull doesn't increase as the sedation is being stopped, because an increase in pressure inside the skull means swelling, and swelling means the brain suffers. So that's the main risk."
