The 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi will see a bunch of sporting 'firsts'.

The Games will see twelve new events and women competing in categories such as ski jumping for the first time.

"For the upcoming Winter Games in Sochi, we have 98 events. These are twelve more medals to be distributed among men and women, compared to the Vancouver Games. The objective of the IOC is to offer the general public a very exciting programme. We have to make sure that the Games remain relevant, and cater for all tastes, all audiences, all age groups. In the context of the Winter Games, we had the incredible luxury and the possibility to add new events. This is what has been done, and we feel that the offer for Sochi will be extraordinary."

"For the very first time in Sochi, among the eight new events, in four of them, we'll give the opportunity to athletes who have never competed in the Games to perform. In slopestyle, in both snowboard and skiing, in the ski half-pipe, and also in the women's ski jumping, this is a tremendous new opportunity for them, but also for the spectators to see them in action."

"In ski-jumping, one very important addition to the programme: we will have the opportunity to see women competing. The competition will be on the normal hill. With this event, we now have a programme which is gender-balanced. Women and men compete in each discipline of the winter programme."
