With the Winter Olympics just two weeks away, attention is gathering on the various sports, none more so than bobsleigh.
The 2013-4 World Cup 2-woman bobsleigh title was decided by a single point on the final day of the season at Konigssee in Germany on Sunday.
Canadian duo Kaillie Humphries and Heather Moyse, the Olympic champions, led the standings and set the fastest time on the opening run, but their closest challengers, Elana Meyers and Aja Evans of the United States, threw down the gauntlet with a fast second run which took them into provisional first place with a combined time of one minute, 44.27 seconds. And the coaches were happy with that.
Fabienne and Tanja Meyer of Switzerland, whose best finish of the season prior to Konigssee had been a third place at St. Moritz in round six, then produced their best run of the campaign to clock one minute, 44.01 seconds and snatch the lead - cue jubilation all round the Swiss camp.
Pressure on then for the Canadians. Humphries and Moyse were last to come down. Despite a strong start, they lost time in the mid-section, with Humphries clipping the walls on several occasions.
In the end though, she did just enough - a combined 1 minute 44.29 seconds was good enough for third place, three hundredths-of-a-second quicker than German pair Sandra Kiriasis and Franziska Fritz.
Third place on the day was good enough for Humphries and Moyes to take the World Cup.
They finished the season on 1629 points above the American duo of Meyers and Evans' who finished with 1628.
