Reigning world surfing champion, Australia's Joel Parkinson and 11-time world title-winner Kelly Slater of the USA were both eliminated from round three of the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach in Victoria in Australia in an incredible day of upsets on Monday.

Florida's Slater was outmaneuvered by replacement surfer Willian Cardoso to finish equal 13th.

Slater was uncharacteristically out of sync whereas Cardoso was on form from his opening ride to dominate from the outset.

The big Brazilian defeated the four-time Rip Curl Pro champion with a heat tally of 16.66 to King Kelly's 14.96 total score.

World champion Parkinson surfed a brilliant heat but still fell short to Raoni Monterio despite locking in a perfect 10 ride.

The 30-year-old used two excellent rides of 9.60 and 9.57 to win by a mere point .07 and force Parkinson to settle for an equal 13th placing - his worst result in well over a year.

After the win, the unsponsored Monterio, whose family paid for his travel expenses, described the win as a dream come true.
