The European Trophy Ice Hockey final was the topic on all hockey fans lips in Sweden on Sunday as two of the countries top teams battled it out for the title in Bratislava.

Lulea, who currently sit third in the Swedish championship, were taking on compatriots and 2006 winners Farjestad for the right to be called European champions.

It was Lulea who got off to the better start as Finish striker Joonas Vihko directed Linus Persson's cross into the roof of the net after 12 minutes.

Lulea's keeper David Rauito was also playing an important part in the final as he pulled off two goalmouth saves to keep his team ahead before the fists began to fly towards the end of the first period.

In the second period, Lulea's Jan Sandstrom was desperately unlucky not to get on the score sheet when his shot cannoned against the post.

Both goal tenders had been excellent right throughout the final but a costly error by Farestad's Fredrik Petterson-Wentzell was to gift Lulea the title.

The goalie failed to hang on to Lukas Kilstrom's long range effort and Vihko was on had to turn the puck home into an empty net.

The 2-0 win means the European Trophy heads to the north of Sweden for the first time in it's brief history.
