The Winter Olympic venue of Sochi proved to be a happy hunting ground for Austrian Andreas Kofler on sunday.

After recording 101.5 metres with his first jump of the day, he could only watch and wait as German Andreas Wellinger - who jumped a metre shorter - slid down for his second run.

And it was an impressive effort - 103 metres - putting the German in provisional first with 261.6 points.

Richard Freitag could only finish sixth in the normal hill event on Saturday, but the German found his form, edging past Wellinger with a second run jump of 102.5 metres.

It gave him 261.7 points, just 0.1-of-a-point more.

So it left Kofler - third on Saturday - with it all to do, but the Austrian had few problems.

He nailed his last jump - 102.5 metres - to give him a total of 271.3 points, a clear victory.

Freitag came second, with Kofler third.
