The picturesque resort of Ofterschwang, Germany hosted the FIS World Cup Ladies giant slalom race on Friday.

Overall World Cup standings leader Lindsey Vonn started her second run in tenth place, and struggled through an unconvincing and untidy second run to record a time of 1 minute 18.97 and finish off the pace.

Italy's Irene Curtoni finished on the verge of contention after her first outing on the course in the morning left her in 12th place - but improved considerably over the second run.

Curtoni added a 1:18.23 to her earlier time of 1:15.81 for a total of 2:34.04 to move closer to a step on the podium.

Giant Slalom World Champion Tina Maze completed a second run of 1:18.61 but thanks to a scintillating 1:14.75 over the first run was able to tally together a 2:33.36 to take the provisional lead.

Unfortunately for Maze, Viktoria Rebensburg failed to make any errors on her second journey down the course and crossed the line to record a 1:18.66, enough to take the overall win with a total of 2:33.30.

That saw Maze pipped by 0.06 seconds while downhill world champion Elisabeth Goergl of Austria was able to join Curtoni in joint third.

Lindsey Vonn finished a disappointing tenth but remains the overall World Cup standings leader - by 474 points over Maze in second.
