Lochte: "I'm human"

Monday, August 22 2016 by SNTV
  • After Ryan Lochte's New York TV apology, US Olympic Committee CEO Scott Blackmun said on Sunday (21st August) that further action can be expected in the matter of the 12-time swimming medallist and his three teammates, whose story of a robbery overshadowed the Rio de Janeiro Games.

SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Lochte, American swimmer:

"If I, if I didn't over-exaggerate this story, and if I told the entire story, none of this would have happened."

SOUNDBITE (English) Scott Blackmun, US Olympic Committee CEO:

"We did have the one regretful incident with our swimmers. I think we've said enough about that, I think that we all understand that they let down our athletes, they let down Americans and they really let down our hosts in Rio, who did such a wonderful job and we feel very badly about that."

SOUNDBITE (English) Ryan Lochte, American swimmer:

"I take full responsibility and I just want the people of Brazil to know how truly sorry I am, because I'm embarrassed... I'm embarrassed for myself, for my family and for my country. I was highly intoxicated and it was... I'm human and I made a mistake.

"I ripped a poster off the wall in the gas station and coming out, the security guards had a gun, we stepped out of the taxi cab, the guns were pointed at us, and one of the guys, the translator guy or someone, came from the gas station to help out, saying that you have to pay money. So we had to give them money. So a gun was pointed at us, we had to give them money, so you can either call that a robbery, you can call that extortion or you can just say we had to pay the money for the damage of that poster."

SOUNDBITE (English) Patrick Sandusky, Chief External Affairs Officer of US Olympic Committee:

"Four athletes come to you and say 'this is what's happened', we don't have any other reason not to believe them. I think as it evolved over time, as we learned more, as the world learned more, our statement certainly changed and I think that, you know, post this Games, as Scott (Blackmun) described we'll continue to address that."
