Jordan Spieth withdraws from Rio Olympics

Tuesday, July 12 2016 by SNTV
  • File as world number three Jordan Spieth on Monday became the latest in a string of top golfers to withdraw from the Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

World number three Jordan Spieth will not take part in this summer's Olympic Games, says the International Golf Federation.

Spieth, 22, pulled out because of fears concerning the Zika virus in Brazil.

A decision which leaves golf without its top four players when the sport returns to the games for the first time since 1904.

World number one Jason Day, number two Dustin Johnson and number four Rory McIlroy have all already pulled out.

Golf still has eight of the top 15 players in the world competing in Rio, though losing the top four could be a big setback in its bid to stay in the Olympic program. It is assured of being part of the Tokyo Games in 2020, but the International Olympic Committee votes next year to decide whether it stays beyond that.

Two-time major winner Spieth, who will be replaced by Matt Kuchar, is expected to give details about his withdrawal at a news conference before the Open Championship on Tuesday.
