RIO 2016: Johnson pulls out of games over Zika fears

  • US Open champion Dustin Johnson is withdrawing from the Olympics because he is concerned about the Zika virus.

US Open champion Dustin Johnson has become the latest golfer to withdraw from the Rio Olympics over fears of the Zika virus.

In a statement released on Friday Johnson said it would be irresponsible to put his family at risk, with Zika known to cause severe birth defects in babies.

The announcement is another blow to the Rio games, where golf is making a return after a 112-year absence.

Johnson joins seven players who have pulled out due to Zika fears, including world number one Jason Day and Rory McIlroy.
