Tuesday, June 21 2016 by SNTV
  • Russia chief coach Yuri Borzakovsky said on Monday (20th June) that he still hopes to send some athletes to this summer's Rio Olympics.

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Yuri Borzakovsky, chief coach of the Russian athletics team:

"We, as a united team, will appear honourably anyway, at the national championships. We fit the (Olympic) criteria, criteria we have in order to qualify for the official start (of the Olympics). We are still living with the hope, living with the strong feeling that some (athletes) will still go to the Olympics. Some of our athletes will be accepted."

SOUNDBITE: (Russian) Dmitri Shlyakhtin, President of the All-Russia Athletics Federation (ARAF):

"On the matter of the Olympic flag, several athletes like Yelena Isinbayeva have already announced that she won't take part in the Olympics under any flag except the Russian one. I think that many athletes, there are sportsmen who are ready to participate to take part in the Olympics and accept certain things which have been announced by IAAF. It's all individual and I think the federation will proceed with all these cases on a personal basis."
