Rain halts play in Stuttgart

Monday, June 13 2016 by SNTV
  • There were boos from the crowd as Dominic Thiem and Philipp Kohlschreiber left court after organisers decided to suspend the Mercedes Cup final due to rain on Sunday (12th June).

The Mercedes Cup final between home favourite Philipp Kohlschreiber and Austrian Dominic Thiem, which already an hour late to start, was halted for about five hours on Sunday.

They did manage to play some tennis, though.

The shot of the day came from Thiem, an audacious return from between his legs.

But despite all the flair, he would go on to lose the point.

The match was finally suspended after another delay, with the two tied 6-6 and German Kohlschreiber up 3-2 in the first set tiebreak.

The final straw came when Kohlschreiber slipped as he attempted to reach Thiem's serve.

The players were pulled off court by organisers, a decision that was met by boos from some of the crowd.

Workers tried to dry the slippery court with hot-air blowers, but the rain kept returning to make it impossible to play.

The match will be completed on Monday (13th June).
