  • Dominic Thiem came from one set down to beat Roger Federer in the semi-final of the Mercedes Cup on Saturday (11th June).

Roger Federer squandered two match points and lost to Dominic Thiem 3-6, 7-6 (7), 6-4 in a rain-interrupted Mercedes Cup semi-final on Saturday.

The number one seed won the first set but then found himself five games down in the second. Federer though was able to pull even by winning five straight games.

In the tiebreaker, Federer wasted one match point with a smash into the net. He let his second go begging too before Thiem won the set with a smash.

Federer, playing on his favorite surface, now had to go again for another set but it was Thiem who got the break in the seventh game to make it 4-3.

The rain then stopped play for 30 minutes but the Austrian secured his win when Federer sent a backhand wide on Thiem's second match point.

Thiem will be looking for a fourth title in 2016 in the final and now sits at No. 7 in the world. He'll play either Juan Martin del Potro or Philipp Kohlschreiber for the title.
