Ali 'a beacon of hope' - Hauser

  • Muhammad Ali biographer Thomas Hauser on Saturday (4th June) looked back on the life of the boxing legend who "helped change America".

SOUNDBITE (English) Thomas Hauser, Muhammad Ali biographer:

"George Foreman tweeted today that Muhammad Ali made you love him, and there's a lot of truth in that. Even the people who didn't like Ali, when they were in his presence had to like Ali. There were people who condemned him as an anti-white, anti-American, unpatriotic draft dodger, and if they ever came face-to-face with him, that man with that incredible smile and twinkle in his eye, the hatred would dissipate and they'd go over and they'd want to shake hands, they'd want an autograph, they'd want to hug him. He had that aura about him. He was arguably the greatest fighter of all time, he was a beacon of hope for oppressed people all over the world, when he refused induction into the United States army in the height of the war in Vietnam he stood up to armies everywhere in support of the proposition that unless you have a very good reason for killing war is wrong. But it might be that his greatest contribution is that there was an aura of pure goodwill and love about him and, by his example and his persona, he taught a lot of people how to love."
