Murray: "Making final would be big"

Thursday, June 02 2016 by SNTV
  • Andy Murray said it would be "big" if he reaches his first French Open final as he reflected on reaching the semi-final on Wednesday (1st June). Stan Wawrinka reacted to his last eight victory and expects a tough semi-final against the "very impressive" Murray. Richard Gasquet, who was knocked out of the tournament by Murray, said that the Scot "didn't miss a return" in the third and fourth set of their match.

SOUNDBITE: (English) Richard Gasquet, lost to Andy Murray 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5

    (Q. The match was really even in the first two sets? What happened? No energy or Murray makes a lot of drop shots?):

"Of course in the fourth it was a little bit more difficult for me physically. To be honest, he just played better than me. He didn't miss a return after that, and especially the court was very slow, very difficult for my game, especially for the serve. When I'm playing a guy like Murray who is never missing a return, it's very difficult."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Stan Wawrinka, defeated Albert Ramos-Vinolas 6-2, 6-1, 7-6

    (Q. The fact that you won here last year, does it give you more confidence or it puts on you more pressure?):

"I think it will give me more confidence, for sure, and less pressure, because I won it. So I have a different mentality this year. I'm feeling way better. Today it was a really good match. I play some really good tennis. I was really focused out there. I am moving well. I'm really happy with what I'm doing so far, and being in semi-final again, it's something really good for me."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Murray, defeated Richard Gasquet 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5:

    (Q. Your fourth semifinal here. You don't have to face Novak Djokovic or Rafa Nadal this time, but I'm sure you'll see Stan as just as tough an opponent?):

"He's been at the top of the game now for a number of years, you know, and is still improving. Been a little bit inconsistent this year, but obviously won the tournament last week and has been playing better with each match here. It will be obviously very tough. He plays well on that court, so I'll have to play great tennis to beat him."

SOUNDBITE: (English) Andy Murray, defeated Richard Gasquet 3-6, 6-4, 6-1, 7-5

    (Q. I know your target isn't just to reach the final, but how big of an achievement would it be to have made the final at all four slams?):

"You know, this stage of my career to sort of do things that I have never done before, you know, is nice. That's one of the things that sort of motivates me and drives me. That's why my results on clay over the last couple of years have, you know, been really special to me because I never expected that really, and it had come, you know, in the latter stages of my career. So if I was able to make the final here it would be, yeah, big for me. But I'm here to try and win the tournament, not make the final."
